Did you know that mental health conditions affect one in four people in the UK? But what is mental health?
Simply it is the health of our mental wellbeing. This could be good or bad. We tend to think that we only have mental health if there is a problem. Wrong! So, why is it still a fact that too many people are made to feel isolated, ashamed and worthless because of this.
Time to Talk Day is promoted every year and encourages everyone to be more open about mental health both good and bad. To share our problems we need to be able to talk. To help you need someone to listen. The concept is so simple and yet it can change lives.
In Jamie’s Talk he often tells the story of when he hit rock bottom. What saved his life was having someone who was willing to listen to him, understand him and to just be there. If you are not in a situation where you need to talk, try to be the person who listens. However, always remember to keep yourself safe.
With that said we know that talking about mental health can feel awkward. What do you say? How do you approach the subject. It doesn’t have to be like this. Jamie shares his story.
Jamie knows all to well about how much talking can make a massive difference. But, you have to choose the right time. It’s important that conversations happen at the right times and in a place that feels comfortable and natural, for both parties. The trick is choosing that time and place to suit you. Is it better to talk about our feelings when we are distracted and doing something else. The more normal the setting, the less unusual and uncomfortable the conversation can feel. Sometimes all you need is a good friend and some food!
Jamie found out this the hard way, after his illness Complex Regional Pain syndrome. He was left feeling like a burden on his life and the life of those around him, he hit his lowest point after loosing his bladder control after getting ready for a wedding. He wet himself and at that point felt he had no way out. After a drug overdose Jamie met the person he could talk to. This turned a negative situation into a positive outcome. Jamie found Wheelchair sport. From there he found a support network. And the rest is history for him. Jamie has achieved so much and you can catch up with him at his talks or events, so keep an eye out on the events page.

Does he still suffer with his mental health? Yes! Somedays his mental health is good, he understands his situation and he feels confident in his situation. Other days his mental health is poor, he feels his situation getting the better of him and he struggles to cope. Yes, this is normal.
