Brand, branding and brand strategy, do we really know the difference?
Why branding matters. And my tried & tested tips for creating a strong brand in today’s digital market.
I am all about the Brand. Getting it right for you and your business. Stripping away what doesn’t matter and communicating in plain English what’s important.
You will hear me say ‘you don’t own your brand!’
What does that mean? Your brand is not your logo! It’s not about the blue or the red or the graphics. It’s how people feel about you and your business.
Good, bad, or indifferent. It even starts when you’re at a Zoom meeting. How you look, what you say, how you communicate: these are all determinants of how people will react, and you hope, why they will choose you!
And it’s the same for Nike, McDonalds or Tesco.
‘Oh, where does the logo fit in?’ Well, that’s the graphic reminder of your brand. And yes, it’s really important too.
I have been living and breathing design and branding for many years and have worked with some impressive ‘big brands’, including Texaco, Tie Rack, Links of London, Kanebo Cosmetics, De Vere Hotels and most of the UK charities; Beating Bowel Cancer, Battersea Dogs Home, GDBA and WRVS.
You can find my work zipping along the motorways, as WPGroup vehicles fuel the South West, on the shelves of lubricant retail outlets, in ATS service centres throughout the UK, and on the forecourts of Texaco fuelling stations.
I am now using my extensive knowledge to help and educate companies on ‘how to build strong brands with strategy’.
Brand Identity
Your brand matters... it usually provides a customers’ first and most important impression of
your company. Professional, innovative and clever branding says as much about your company’s principles as the products and services you offer.
From large blue-chip clients to small local businesses, Nickel Design applies the same passion, creativity and professional standards for everyone we work with.
Design & Marketing
Great design speaks at a glance - it works or it doesn’t. The considered use of colour, space, fonts
and imagery - whether obvious or subliminal - helps to convey to the customer your company’s
principles and values.
We have created everything from company logos, stationery and branded items to online social media graphics, corporate brand strategies and national marketing campaigns.
Project Management
From an initial conversation to presenting the final designs, Nickel Design is experienced in working to
strict timescales and managing multiple projects. This will ensure your finished products are delivered on time.
In addition, we realise that viewing something on a computer screen is entirely different to holding
something physical in your hand. Pandemics notwithstanding, we are just as happy to come and talk with you in person as we are to hold conference calls online.
Mike was amazing and super friendly during our conversations and really informed my decisions with his wealth of knowledge. It was really nice to have a bigger business supporting me as a student and setting off on my own. I would 100% recommend him to anyone looking for a new design.
Cracking rebranding work from Mike. Couldn't have asked for a more unique design, but still incorporated the quirky bits from my original logo. Mike really fulfilled the brief & some. 100% chuffed to bits with the outcome & the superb advice along the way.
Mike took me through a comprehensive rebranding exercise that started with the big picture question "who are you" right the way through to the detail of "how will this logo look in a social media badge". And the result? A Logo that feels like it is an extension of me, and a range of images, brand guides, collateral design ideas and design variations to fit any possible usage.

There’s nothing better than working with a seasoned pro like Mike. No pinching stuff of the web, no ‘it’ll be ok’ shortcuts, just a solid graphic designer with great ideas and a commercial understanding few others have.
Oh, and before you give your design work to anyone else, check out if they can actually use a pen (before spending hours on the computer).
So few designers can articulate their ideas quickly and elegantly on paper – it’s so important.
